Nano-Ear That Can Hear Sound Of Bacteria

Scientists at Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich have created a nano-ear which can trap sound waves much below the human ear can hear. With this technology, scientists have added an entirely new dimension to the domains of acoustics and biology. This nano-ear studies sound waves emitted by micro-organisms.

A team of German engineers including Jochen Feldmann and Andrey Lutich have achieved the breakthrough. After working on the principle of sensing sound waves at nano level, the two scientists have come to the conclusion that if gold nano particles are used along with lasers, an instrument which has sensitivity 6 magnitudes less than human ears can be created.

The duo used a beam of laser at specific point in this experiment. They created an electric field with the network of lasers. According to a report, this makes the electric dipole moment attract nearest nano particle in the Web so created.

The frequency of the sound waves making vibrations in nano-particles is sensed and related to sound waves of a particular frequency. The engineers claim that with this nano-ear, one can hear sense sound as low as -60dB.

Can you imagine bacteria-powered lights? Well you don't have to imagine them anymore...Philips has already got them for you. The company has designed a natural lighting system based on biological process and has come up with the Bio-light concept.

The system designed by Philips uses bioluminescent bacteria that feeds on methane and composted material to produce a soft green light, not all that different from the light emitted by fireflies and red tide, said a CNET report.

The Bio-light would be operative as long as there were a supply of nutrients. It is worth mentioning here that the resulting light is not bright enough to illuminate an entire room. According to Philips, the Bio-light can be used well to power night-time road markings, warning strips for planes and stairs.

Robots Getting Inspiration From Bacteria

Gathering the principles of bacteria navigation, researchers are designing a new generation of smart robots that can form intelligent swarms.

In a brand new trend, robots will seek inspiration from bacteria. Researchers at Tel Aviv University (TAU) have finalised a computational model that defines how bacteria, moving in a swarm is quick at adapting to the given environment and the same could be applied to man-made technologies, including computers and robots.

Gathering the principle of bacteria navigation, researchers are designing a new generation of smart robots that can form intelligent swarms and aid in the development of medical micro-robots or de-code systems used in social networks.

Coming as a surprise, researchers have found that computationally, bacteria have superior survival tactics, in finding food and avoiding harm. Based on these survival tactics, new and more efficient technologies can be designed.

In the computer model developed by the TAU researchers, bacteria decreased their peers’ influence while navigating in a beneficial direction, but listened to each other when they sensed they were failing. This is not only a superior way to operate, but a simple one as well. Such a model shows how a swarm can perform optimally with only simple computational abilities and short-term memory.
